If you're looking for a way to enjoy this up coming long weekend from the comfort of your own living room, I have the perfect vibe for you. Grab a glass of wine, some leftovers from your New Year’s Eve spread, and, if you really want to take it to the next level, take a cue from Michelle and her hubby—you know what kind of dessert to add to the mix. Once you’ve set the ambiance, it’s time to Netflix and chill with Michelle Buteau’s new comedy special.
The comedian and actress, known for her roles in Survival of the Thickest, The First Wives Club, and Babes, is serving up glam boss babe vibes with her signature look: big, "Buteau-ful" hair and a chic suit. Michelle is not only delivering laughs during the 1-hour, 4-minute special, but she's also making Herstory as the first woman to have a stand-up comedy special at Radio City Music Hall in New York City.
Michelle's special starts by giving us a front-row seat to what it’s like being a mom of 5-year-old twins, Hazel and Otis, making all Black mommas say, "Girl! My kids act the same damn way, lol." Because let’s be real—there’s nothing more humbling than having kids who will respectfully point out your flaws, leaving you looking "Viola Davis tired," and sometimes having us "bending over all the time—and not in ways you like."
The comedian continues with a lighthearted story about her good friend, "The Oracle," who happens to be a lesbian, and the laughs they shared about possibly using a Theragun as a sex toy. The message at the end of the joke was a reminder to comedians that we can make fun of each other without belittling a group of people. Michelle said, "So if you guys ever run into Dave Chappelle, can you let him know that shit? And he is the GOAT—if that means 'going off about trans people.' Dave, it’s not funny; it’s dangerous. Make it funny."
The First Wives Club star is in her zone throughout the special, giving us a glimpse into her life as a wife and the hilarious shenanigans she and her husband get into. But hey, shenanigans keep the marriage going strong. FYI: Shenanigans do require a shower before picking the kids up from school.
The South Jersey native gave us a masterclass on how comedy can still be relatable, funny, and conscious—all while being unapologetically real. She also taught us the importance of embracing who you are, regardless of what society thinks you should be or what’s considered “right.” It’s a vibe of “forget being politically correct—I’m on the side of reality.”
Let us know if you tuned into the special and how did you like it?
