According to Google, the Black Onyx stone is a powerful protection stone. Its deep black color symbolizes the night, symbolizing strength, perseverance, and overcoming challenges. It is believed to absorb negative energy and provide emotional and physical strength to its wearer.
Since its launch in May 2021, Onyx Collective has diligently told the stories of the black and brown communities. It has truly lived up to its name by showcasing the strength, perseverance, and ability to overcome challenges within those communities.
Tara Ducan, the president of the content brand company, stated in an interview with Variety that the company is dedicated to creating a space that prioritizes "uncompromising high-quality stories from creators of color." With several projects already completed, Tara's vision is coming to life as she's given aspiring directors like Miles Warren and Ahmir “Questlove” Thompson their directorial debut opportunities. This is truly a great example of creating opportunities and welcoming the community to participate.
The innovative network has something for everyone's taste, from documentaries like "Aftershock," which chronicles the high mortality rate of black women during childbirth, to "Black Twitter: A People’s History," which takes us on a journey of how Black Twitter became an outlet for us to share our truths and have a few laughs along the way. If you're into series and love to binge-watch, you'll be intrigued by shows like "UnPrisoned" and my favorite "Reasonable Doubt," both of which will enter their 2nd seasons soon, so hurry up and watch. And we can't forget about movies like "Bruiser," which gives us an up-close look at the effects of toxic masculinity.
It's become a popular meme on social media that even though we've lived in different parts of the U.S., we've lived the same life. This is why it's important that our stories are told through our perspectives. Tara Duncan and the Onyx Collective are stepping up to ensure we are authentically represented and seen for who we truly are.
Let us know what your favorite project from Onyx Collective is and what you hope to see from the network in the future.
