The 18th Annual All-Star Gospel Celebration (ASGC), led by creator and executive producer Tomeka B Holyfield, was a remarkable success, filling the CIEL Creative Space in Berkeley, CA, to capacity. Themed "A Love Letter to the Bay," this year's event highlighted the profound impact that faith and community have on the lives of NBA stars, legends, and local heroes. Despite the rain that fell on Northern California, the spirit of the evening remained vibrant and undeterred.
Co-hosted by former NBA player Maurice "MO" Evans and National Basketball Wives Association member Dru Evans, ASGC upheld its reputation as the premier gospel event during NBA All-Star weekend. The evening featured electrifying performances from a diverse lineup, including comedian J-Red, Motown Gospel sensation Ariel Fitz-Patrick, GRAMMY®-nominated artist MAJOR., acclaimed saxophonist Angella Christie, hip-hop artist Miles Minnick, and Lena Byrd Miles. Each performance resonated with the audience, amplifying the event's message of hope and unity.
A pivotal moment of the evening was the 2025 Slam Dunk Honors presentation, which recognized individuals for their outstanding contributions both on and off the court. NBA Hall of Famer Gary Payton received the 2025 Slam Dunk Off-the-Court Award and shared heartfelt reflections on faith and community service. Legendary champion Elvin Hayes and Golden State Warriors forward Kevon Looney also received awards, inspiring attendees with their stories of perseverance and gratitude.
Tomeka Holyfield’s passion for uplifting narratives was evident throughout the night. She expressed her excitement about how Berkeley exceeded expectations, emphasizing that each year, the All-Star Gospel Celebration shines a light on the profound power of faith in people's lives. Her commitment to showcasing the stories of both local heroes and NBA legends created an atmosphere of inspiration and joy.
The event also recognized community leaders, including Pastor Mike McBride of Live Free USA, who played a vital role in ensuring the celebration's success. The "Dear Community" panel discussion, organized by Live Free USA, addressed pressing community issues, allowing local leaders to explore the intersection of sports, culture, and activism. This initiative highlighted the importance of ASGC as a platform for elevating heroes and inspiring hope.
Holyfield’s vision extends beyond the celebration; it aims to cultivate a space where faith, culture, and community efforts converge. The event is dedicated to raising awareness for important causes, including breast cancer and autism awareness, and fostering a spirit of unity among diverse groups.
As the evening concluded, it was clear that the 18th Annual All-Star Gospel Celebration had once again solidified its status as a must-attend event during NBA All-Star weekend. With partners like Shoulder Up, Live Free USA, Visit Berkely, Becker Boards, and California Black Freedom Fund, the celebration not only uplifted spirits but also connected individuals to a greater mission of service and compassion.
Tomeka B. Holyfield’s leadership and vision continue to inspire, making the ASGC a treasured tradition that celebrates the heart and resilience of those making a difference in their communities. "We were honored to celebrate the remarkable achievements of others by sharing their uplifting stories of faith and community service. The heartfelt narratives touched our souls and inspired us all."
