The Women’s Excellence Empowerment Brunch by 93.9-FM (WKYS) was simply beautiful. The event took place at Mary Lou’s Restaurant (located in Fort Washington, Maryland) where guests gathered to embrace and educate one another. What a way to uplift women, connect and network with powerful women in different industries.
Showcasing their talents, two of DC’s very own artists Ashya Clark and J’TA blessed the guests with empowering songs. Ashya performing one of her very own songs and J’TA singing her own version of the legendary Chaka Khan “Ain’t Nobody” and her featured song “Optimistic” with go-go band CCB.

Toasting the day away, host Chey Parker and Angie Mia started the brunch with affirmations; encouraging guests to stay focused on their paths, understanding that sometimes things get tough, but continue to push through. Once everyone was settled in, the panelists (Terra Stephens, Folasade Ogunmokun and Mikea Turner) were welcomed on the floor... all specializing in different paths from mental health to media knowledge and the importance of supporting black brands.

As topics flowed, Chey Parker brought up the conversation of “Friendships and Sisterhood” as a career woman. She asked “What would be your advice for some girl that’s missing friends/relationships because they want to follow their career?”
Terra Stephens, Mental Health instructor, answered first saying, “Find friends that have the same interests... You have to let it flow, but isolation is good. You may be in a season where you may not attract the right people. Isolation is like a reset. It helps us heal.”
Fox 5 Anchor, Mikea Turner, encouraged women to lean on their faith saying, “Make a list and get a journal. Often times when you have a quiet moment God is doing something for you. Isolation means elevation! You have questions, pray about it, be still and hear God.”
Each panelist touched on the importance of finding the right circles with people that will not only support, but that will pour into each other in healthy ways. Feeling empowered by your loved ones or romantic partner is very important especially when being a self-starter.

The women shared enlightening and emotional experiences when speaking on how their romantic relationships empowered them along their journeys.
Folasade Ogunmokun, Founder and CEO of UnskryptedTV, shared an experience she had with a former partner where she felt like they were competing with her in life. She says, “Not everyone will be able to appreciate your presence in life.”
Mikea ended the topic with encouraging women to “Embrace those periods of life when they don’t go the way you think they will be. It’s more powerful to make room for your blessings.”
As the panel came to an end, each speaker shared different ways we can do better with supporting other women. Mikea said, “Don’t gate keep, once that door is open leave it open. Don’t be intimidated by others bringing diff things to the table.” Folasade added, Keep the door open, shine light when you can and clap when you see someone doing good because what are you losing by supporting someone else? The claps will come back."
Lastly, Terra shared some great advice saying, “Be honest and transparent. Sometimes you’re not in the right space to show up, but do not show up with bad energy.”
The panelists were applauded with a standing ovation and cheers. Taking a moment to give flowers, each speaker was honored with a ‘Women of the Year’ award for their hard work for the community. WKYS also took the time to honor Mary Lou’s owner, Keyanna Morant, with a ‘Lifetime Achievement Award’. Her energy and love for empowering others spoke through her thank you speech. Giving thanks to her supporters, loved ones and WKYS for blessing her with the opportunity to continue to inspire others.

Ending ‘Women’s History Month’ with a bang, the Women’s Excellence Empowerment Brunch was the best event to mingle with like-minded women who understand the importance of making your mark in this world and to never allow your crown to fall.
