In honor of Women’s History Month, it is important to recognize and celebrate the remarkable achievements of women who have dedicated their lives to uplifting and empowering others. One such woman is Jacqueline Snell, the founder of Jazzy Jam for Empowerment (JJE) and the visionary behind the “WaterCooler Room,” a groundbreaking wellness center at the McKinley School of Arts in the Pasadena Unified School District (PUSD).
JJE is committed to addressing social issues, mental health, and wellness initiatives among youth. Through her tireless advocacy and dedication, she has created a supportive community that uplifts and empowers young individuals, providing them with the resources and support they need to thrive spiritually and intellectually.
Recognizing the importance of creating a safe space for students to address their emotions and well-being, Jacqueline Snell spearheaded establishing the “WaterCooler Room.” This innovative wellness center serves as a sanctuary where students can take a break, relax, and find solace in a peaceful environment. The room offers comfortable seating, calming lighting, and various resources such as books and puzzles that promote relaxation and self-reflection.
The “WaterCooler Room” provides a physical space for students to decompress and fosters a sense of community and understanding. It encourages students to open up and share their thoughts and feelings with their peers, who can offer empathy, support, and valuable advice. By acknowledging and addressing their emotions, students can develop resilience and learn strategies to manage stress and anxiety.
Jacqueline Snell’s unwavering commitment to creating a nurturing educational environment has garnered recognition and praise from students, parents, and the larger community. Her innovative approach to promoting mental health and well-being among young individuals has proven to be invaluable at a time when suicide rates and mental health challenges among adolescents and young adults are on the rise.
Initiatives
JJE offers a range of initiatives and programs to empower youth and address mental health and wellness. One initiative is the Jazzy Jam Glam Prom Giveaway.
JJE recently joined forces with Sierra Subaru of Monrovia, Pasadena Courtyard by Marriott, Becca’s Closet, Sephora, and Windsor Fashions to launch a remarkable initiative to provide deserving youth with their dream prom attire. This collaborative effort brought together a diverse group of organizations committed to a common goal: alleviating financial burdens for parents and caregivers, conducting non-invasive wellness checks for youth, and creating an unforgettable prom experience.
The impact of this initiative was remarkable. Over 150 dresses and suits were given away to students from the local community, and the event garnered attention from as far as Houston, Texas, with inquiries pouring in from excited students. It was a testament to the power of collaboration and community support.
The impact of the event was best captured through the heartfelt stories of the students. Dominique Carpenter, a student at CIS Academy, expressed her gratitude, stating, “My grandmother is shaking her hands in glory because she doesn’t have to go to a dress shop to look for my dress. It’s already done. And she’s going to be happy that I’m happy.” These moments of joy and well-being validated the event’s mission and highlighted the profound effect it had on the lives of these young individuals.
By providing deserving youth with their dream prom attire, this initiative not only relieved financial burdens but also instilled a sense of dignity, joy, and empowerment in the lives of these young individuals. It served as a reminder that when organizations and individuals come together with a shared purpose, incredible things can be achieved, leaving a lasting impact on the community for years to come.
The event garnered an overwhelming response from the community, with hundreds of high school students attending to find their perfect prom outfits. The Jazzy Jam Glam Prom Dress and Suit Giveaway succeeded in its mission to ease the financial strain by providing free attire to those in need, promoting inclusivity, and ensuring that all students could attend prom without the burden of expensive clothing.
Sierra Subaru of Monrovia, Courtyard by Marriott, Becca’s Closet, Sephora, and Windsor Fashion’s support and commitment to making a difference in the lives of young individuals have empowered countless high school students to embrace their individuality, boost their confidence, and create lasting memories.
Community Events
JJE hosts community events that meet tangible, immediate needs. These events serve as a platform to raise awareness about social issues and promote community engagement. They may include fundraisers, performances, or interactive activities that bring the community together.
Educational Programs
JJE implements creative, hands-on educational programming that highlights and promotes healthy lifestyles. This may include classes and workshops on topics such as nutrition, cooking, physical fitness, and life skills development.
Understanding the significance of targeted support during sensitive periods of adolescence, Jacqueline Snell collaborates with mental health professionals to establish a strong support network with all initiatives. By providing a safe and caring environment, students feel heard, understood, and cared for to help them navigate their emotions and find relief.
Musical Programs
The organization collaborates with local musicians to develop musical programs for youth. This may involve partnerships with recording artists to provide music and other arts-related programs. By nurturing artistic talents and interests, Jazzy Jam for Empowerment encourages youth to explore their creative abilities and find empowerment through self-expression.
Jacqueline Snell’s work exemplifies the transformative power of women in advocating for youth and creating spaces that prioritize mental health and well-being. Her dedication and vision have made a profound impact on the lives of countless young individuals, instilling in them a sense of self-acceptance, resilience, and empowerment.
“Jazzy Jam will continue to find unique ways to support students to ensure they have a safe space and support year-round,” said Snell.
